Anyone who has filled a cabinet with cookware that failed eventually starts asking a different question at the store. Check the material first
Material decides almost everything about lifespan, so start there and be specific. "Stainless," "aluminum," "titanium" alone are not answers; the details matter.
The failure-prone materials are the coated ones. Nonstick and ceramic coatings, no matter the marketing, are thin layers with a different lifespan than the pan beneath them. They scratch, chip, and lose their properties within a few years, and once the coating fails you are cooking on the substrate. A coating is a built-in expiration date, so a "lifetime" claim on a coated pan is rarely credible.
The durable materials are the solid, inert ones. Cast iron and carbon steel last but demand seasoning and rust prevention. Stainless steel is durable but can leach trace nickel and chromium and discolors over time. Solid Grade 1 commercially pure titanium clears the bar with the fewest tradeoffs: it is biologically inert so it never leaches or tastes metallic, it forms a self-healing corrosion-proof oxide layer, and it has no coating to fail. The single most useful question to ask: is the cooking surface the metal itself, or a coating applied on top? If a brand cannot or will not answer, treat the silence as the answer.
Inspect the construction
Material is the foundation; construction is whether it was used well. Handle the piece if you can and look for:
Even, seamless forming. Consistent wall thickness and clean, drawn transitions indicate skilled manufacturing. Sloppy thickness, visible welds where the surface should be smooth, or thin spots are where failure starts.
Solid handle and joint attachment. Handles and lugs are common failure points. Riveted or integrally formed connections outlast glued or thin spot-welded ones. Avoid molded plastic parts that crack with heat and age.
A finish that is the material, not a layer. A heat-treated or naturally finished metal surface ages by patina; a coated or plated finish ages by flaking. Run the real cost math
Buy-it-for-life can look expensive at the shelf and cheap over time. Run cost-per-year, not sticker price. A 40-dollar nonstick pan replaced every four years costs about 10 dollars a year forever and fills the landfill; a solid pan that costs more once but lasts indefinitely trends toward a cost-per-year that keeps shrinking. The red-flag checklist
Walk away, or at least ask hard questions, when you see:
Vague material claims. "Titanium" with no grade, or "infused/coated with titanium," often means a coated substrate, not solid metal.
Marketing over specification. Brands that lead with logos, colors, and "aerospace grade" buzzwords for a pan, but cannot tell you the actual grade and construction, are usually hiding a cheaper build.
A finish that can chip. If the surface is a separate layer, it has a clock on it.
Molded plastic in heat-exposed places. A future crack waiting to happen.
No clear answer on whether the surface is solid or coated. The most important question, and the one a quality maker answers proudly.

If the honest answer is "replaced," it is not buy-it-for-life, whatever the label says.
