Locked and Writing in 3 Steps

Slide the knurled bolt knob forward along its slot to extend the tip.
Twist
Turn the knob a quarter turn into the locking notch. It stays put until you release it.
Reverse to store
Twist back and slide the knob home to retract the tip before it goes back in a pocket.
