The gap in a kit is never the big item. It is the plastic fork that snapped on a frozen dinner, the spoon that stayed in the other bag, the meal eaten with a knife tip because nothing else was there. This set closes that gap twice. Each spork is a single piece of Grade 1 titanium with a stainless wire handle that folds to about 4.4 inches, and a sliding steel sleeve that locks it in both positions. One lives in the mess kit. One lives in the vehicle or the go bag. Neither one ever needs to be thought about again.

A folding utensil lives or dies at the hinge. Most use a friction pivot that loosens with every fold until the handle flops. This one uses a rectangular steel sleeve that slides over the hinge housing and holds the handle rigid when open, then slides back and holds it shut when folded. The bowl itself has no joint at all: one piece of commercially pure titanium, sandblasted matte, with four short tines at the tip. Nothing coated, nothing painted, nothing to flake into your food.

Honest note: the wire handle is stainless steel, not titanium. The loop has to hold its shape through thousands of fold cycles, and at this wire gauge stainless is roughly twice as stiff as titanium, so it stays straight where titanium wire would take a set. The trade is a few grams and a handle you should dry after washing. The part that touches your food is titanium, and only titanium.

Unfold the wire handle until it stops, then slide the steel sleeve down over the hinge housing. The handle is now rigid, and you can dig into a frozen block of chili without the hinge giving. To pack it, slide the sleeve back, fold the handle over the bowl, and seat the sleeve again. Folded, the loop lies flat against the back of the bowl and the whole spork is about the length of your palm. Both sporks slide into the black drawstring pouch, which keeps them from rattling and keeps pocket lint out of the hinge.

Unfold

Swing the wire handle away from the bowl until it stops in line with the head.

Slide the steel sleeve toward the bowl until it seats over the hinge housing. The handle is now rigid.

Slide the sleeve back, fold the handle flat over the bowl, seat the sleeve again and drop it in the pouch.

Before you order: this is a folding spork, not a knife set. There is no serrated edge and no carabiner in the box. The handle is stainless steel wire, not titanium, and it should be dried after washing like any stainless cutlery. Each spork is 6.5 inches open and about 4.4 inches folded; if your cup or pouch is shorter than that, measure first.

Questions, Answered Straight

Does the handle actually lock, or is it a friction hinge?
It locks. A rectangular stainless sleeve slides over the hinge housing and holds the handle rigid in the open position. Slide it back and fold the handle, and the same sleeve holds it shut. There is no spring or detent to wear out, and the sleeve carries the load so the pivot pin does not.
Will it fit in my canteen cup or mess kit?
Folded, each spork is about 4.4 inches long and lies flat, so it fits inside a GI-pattern canteen cup, which is over 5 inches long. Both sporks fit in the included pouch together. Open, it is 6.5 inches, long enough to reach the bottom of a freeze-dried meal pouch.
Is the whole spork titanium?
The head is, and that is the only part that touches your food: Grade 1 commercially pure titanium with a sandblasted finish and no coating. The wire handle, lock sleeve and pin are stainless steel. At this wire diameter stainless is about twice as stiff as titanium, which is what keeps the loop straight through years of folding. Dry the handle after washing and it will not give you trouble.
Is there a knife or serrated edge?
No. This spork has a spoon bowl with four short tines and nothing else. If you need a blade, carry a blade. We would rather sell you a spork that does one job than a utensil that does three badly.
Why two in a set?
Because one is none. Put one in the mess kit and one in the vehicle, the desk drawer or the other bag, and you are never the person eating with a knife tip. It also means a loaner does not leave you short.
Can it go in the dishwasher?
Yes. Titanium does not care about detergent or heat. After the cycle, open the handle and let the hinge drain so the stainless parts dry. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough in the field.
Will it rust or leave a taste?
The titanium head will not rust and has no taste of its own; it is the same inert metal used in surgical implants. The stainless handle resists rust under normal care. Rinse salt or acidic food off the hinge and dry it, and you will not see corrosion.
How is this different from your one-piece sporks?
The Long Handle Spork and the Prime Spork are single pieces of titanium with no hinge, about the same weight and longer, and they are the better pick when length is not a problem. This set is for the kit where a 9-inch utensil will not fit: it folds to about 4.4 inches and locks in both positions, and you get two of them.
