Winter, Solved
A Real Wood Stove You Carry In. Watch the Fire From Your Sleeping Bag.
When the temperature drops, a fire changes everything. This is a full backpacking wood stove in pure Grade 1 titanium: 7.9 lbs packed, folding legs, a nested chimney that assembles with gloves on, and glass windows on the front and side so the firelight reaches every corner of your tent. It packs in on your back, sets up in under 5 minutes, and turns a cold shelter into the warmest place for miles.

The Material Argument
Steel Stoves Are a Countdown. Titanium Is Not.
Steel tent stoves rust within a season or two, warp from heat cycling, and shed burnt paint into your tent. This stove is Grade 1 commercially pure titanium in every component that touches heat: firebox, chimney, spark arrestor, legs, vents. Titanium forms a self-healing oxide layer that makes rust chemically impossible, and its thermal expansion is half that of steel, so the firebox holds its shape season after season.
Packed weight
7.9 lbs
Steel stoves run 15 to 25 lbs. This one carries in on your back.
Setup
Under 5 min
Folding legs and thumb screws sized for winter gloves. No tools.
Coatings
0
No paint to burn off and flake into your tent. The surface is the material.
Note: titanium costs more than steel up front. A steel stove at $300 that lasts 3 seasons costs you $900 over ten winters of replacements. This one is $499 once. It is not the expensive option, it is the only one you buy.
Right Size Check
Know the Size Before You Order
This is a backpacking stove, not a basecamp stove. The firebox is 15 in long, 8.75 in wide, and just over 7 in tall, roughly the size of a shoebox. That compact box is how the whole system packs down to 7.9 lbs.
Firebox
15 x 8.75 x 7 3/16 in
Bare box, legs folded
Max log length
12 to 13 in
15 in interior length
Door opening
6.75 x 4.75 in
Split wood to fit the door
Chimney height
6 ft 5 in
Assembled, foot to top, arrestor off
Right for you if
You carry your stove in, sleep 1 to 4 people in a hot tent or tipi, and are happy cutting wood to 12 to 13 in lengths split small enough to pass a 6.75 x 4.75 in door.
Not right for you if
You heat a large wall tent or a 6+ person tipi, or you want to load full-length 16 in firewood. A heavier basecamp stove suits that job better.
Deep in the Backcountry
Warmth That Goes Where You Go
Legs fold flat, the chimney nests into itself, and the whole system rides in the included carrying case: one grab, 7.9 lbs. At camp, open the vents to heat a 4-person tent in minutes, then crack them to slow the burn and stretch each load. The side window throws firelight across the canvas, which is the difference between a shelter and a home.
Built Right
Nested Cylinders, Not Rolled Sheet Metal
Most packable chimneys are flat sheets curled into tubes: the seam never seals, creosote builds in the overlap, and they warp until they will not assemble. These are true precision-fit cylinders that slide together, sealed and straight, even with thick gloves at 15 below. Every joint uses an oversized thumb screw. No tools, no tiny hardware lost in the snow.

The Rear Chimney Difference
The Whole Stove Top Is a Cooking Surface
Most tent stoves put the chimney in the middle of the top, turning your cook surface into an obstacle course. This chimney exits from the rear center, leaving the entire flat top unobstructed. Boil a kettle on one side, warm a pan on the other, dry wet gloves in the middle, all at once. Pair it with Valtcan titanium pots, the percolator, or the mess kit and the stove top becomes your full backcountry kitchen.

Failure Analysis
Every Tent Stove Fails Somewhere. Find the Failure Mode.
Tent stoves die in predictable ways: rust, warp, burnt-off paint, leaking chimney seams, lost hardware, and sparks on canvas. Each one was engineered out of this stove, not patched afterward.

How It Works
Cold Camp to Warm Tent in 3 Steps
1
Unfold
Legs swing out from the firebox and lock by hand. Panels set with oversized thumb screws. No tools, under 5 minutes, gloves on.
2
Stack
Nested chimney cylinders slide together into a sealed 6 ft 5 in stack through your stove jack, capped by the titanium spark arrestor.
3
Burn
Load 12 to 13 in splits through the front door, light, and tune the side vents: open them to heat the tent in minutes, crack them to slow the burn and stretch each load.
Before you order: this is a compact backpacking wood stove that takes 12 to 13 in logs. Use it in a hot tent with a proper stove jack, keep safe clearance from canvas and gear, secure the chimney with the arrestor tie-downs in wind, and never leave a burn unattended. Surfaces get extremely hot in use. Glass panels are tough but pack them with care in transit.
Read before you burn: full setup, first-fire seasoning, vent tuning, and care instructions are in the Valtcan Tent Stove Owner's Booklet (PDF). A printed copy ships in the box.
FAQ
Questions, Answered Straight
How big is it, really?
Compact. The firebox is 15 x 8.75 x 7 3/16 in, about the size of a shoebox, with a 15 in interior and a 6.75 x 4.75 in door. It takes logs up to 12 to 13 in long, split to fit the door. Legs add about 4 in of height. It is sized to carry in and heat a 1 to 4 person hot tent. If you need to heat a large wall tent or burn full-length 16 in firewood, this is not the stove for you.
How often do I need to add wood?
More often than a heavy steel or cast iron stove. Thin titanium is what gets this stove to 7.9 lbs, and the tradeoff is that it holds very little heat once the fire burns down. Field reports on titanium tent stoves, ours included, typically run 45 to 90 minutes per load depending on wood species, split size, and vent setting. Most hot tenters burn hard in the evening to warm the tent and dry boots and layers, load it one last time before bed, and rely on a sleeping bag rated for the night once it burns down. Run a CO alarm in any heated tent.
Do I need a special tent?
You need a hot tent with a stove jack: a heat-resistant port that lets the chimney exit safely. Most canvas tipis and hot tents have one. The 6 ft 5 in stack with a 2 5/8 in base fits standard jacks.
Why does the nested chimney matter?
Rolled chimneys are flat sheets curled into tubes: the seam leaks, collects creosote, and warps until assembly becomes a fight. Nested sections are true cylinders that slide together with a precision fit. Better seal, better draw, and they assemble with thick gloves at 15 below.
Will it rust or warp like my steel stove did?
No. Titanium forms a self-healing oxide layer, so corrosion is chemically impossible: leave it wet, snowed on, or packed away for months. Its thermal expansion is about half of steel's, so the firebox does not distort from heat cycling.
Can I really cook on it?
Yes. Because the chimney exits at the rear center, the entire flat top is usable: kettle on one side, pan on the other, gloves drying in the middle. It pairs with Valtcan titanium pots, the percolator, and the mess kit.
How does it pack down?
Legs fold flat against the firebox, the chimney sections nest into each other, and everything fits the included carrying case at 7.9 lbs total. The arrestor and exhaust control are small enough to ride in a backpack pocket.
Is it really all titanium?
Yes: firebox, chimney sections, spark arrestor, legs, and vents. Not titanium-coated steel and not a titanium body with a steel chimney. Grade 1 commercially pure titanium, the same class of material used in aerospace and medical implants.
How limited is availability?
The first production run was 50 units, sold only on valtcan.com. When a batch sells out, the next run depends on demand and production scheduling, with pre-orders offered between batches.
